Prof. Dr. med. Anette-Gabriele Ziegler serves as Director of the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich and Full Professor (W3) in Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes at the School of Medicine, Technische Universität München (TUM). She concurrently holds leadership roles as CEO of Forschergruppe Diabetes e.V. and Honorary Professor at Technische Universität Dresden's Faculty of Medicine.
Her medical education was completed in Munich, followed by postdoctoral training at Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School. She earned specialization in Internal Medicine (1991) and Endocrinology (1994), and received the Heisenberg Career Development Award (1993-1996).
Ziegler's research centers on type 1 diabetes pathogenesis, prediction, early diagnosis, and prevention strategies, with particular focus on gestational diabetes. Her vision advocates for "a world without type 1 diabetes" through genetic risk screening and pre-symptomatic intervention in children, driving global prevention initiatives like GPPAD and TEDDY.

Her leadership extends to directing Germany's Diabetes Congress and establishing the annual Symposium on type 1 diabetes.
Ziegler leads Helmholtz Munich's Institute of Diabetes Research, which houses the globally recognized Study Centers for Childhood Diabetes - Early Care and Prevention. As Speaker of GPPAD and head of the German Center for Diabetes Research's Type 1 Diabetes Academy, she coordinates multinational efforts across 7 countries to prevent autoimmune diabetes.
