Dr. Aneika Leney is an Associate Professor of Biological Mass Spectrometry at the University of Birmingham's School of Biosciences. She leads the Leney Lab, focusing on protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) and their roles in health, disease, and biotechnological applications. Her research combines structural biology and advanced mass spectrometry techniques to study protein function and communication.
Dr. Leney holds a PhD from the University of Leeds (2013) and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of York (2008). She has conducted postdoctoral research at the Alberta Glycomics Centre and Utrecht University, Netherlands, before establishing her independent group at Birmingham. She teaches Biochemistry courses across all year groups and supervises students in proteomics and mass spectrometry.
Her research themes include: (1) Monitoring PTMs in health and disease using mass spectrometry and (2) Characterizing PTMs in large biological complexes for biotech applications like food dyes and solar energy harvesting. Recent publications highlight her work on SUMOylation in DNA repair, protein-protein interactions, and cyanobacterial proteomics.
Dr. Leney collaborates with the Advanced Mass Spectrometry Facility at Birmingham and contributes to interdisciplinary projects in structural biology. She advocates for innovation in proteomics and mentors students interested in mass spectrometry-driven research.
