Andy Taylor is a Lecturer at the School of Humanities, York St John University. He holds a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Social Policy and an MA in Criminal Justice Studies from Durham University. With 33 years of service as a Police Officer (retiring as a Community Sergeant in 2017), his career bridges academia and law enforcement.
His research focuses on police culture, climate activism (e.g., Extinction Rebellion), and the intersection of criminal justice processes with marginalized groups. Notable projects include studies on restorative justice, community policing in deindustrialized regions, and the emotional dynamics of judicial processes. He collaborates with Stockholm and Uppsala Universities on projects involving riot policing and emotionality in legal contexts.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on criminology, policing partnerships, and social justice. Professional activities include leading the York St John Ecological Research Group and serving as a research lead for Extinction Rebellion York.
