Andy MacGregor is a Research Director at ScotCen Social Research (2005–present), previously serving as Senior Researcher (2004–2005) and Research Manager at Scottish Health Feedback (1998–2004). His work focuses on public health policy evaluation, particularly alcohol and tobacco legislation. He led the Evaluation of the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Test Purchasing of Alcohol in Fife Pilot, and currently oversees qualitative components of two major studies: Remode (comparing mindfulness and wellness recovery therapies) and the Determining the Impact of Smoking Point of Sale Legislation Among Youth Study (with Professor Amanda Amos).
His research spans mixed methods and qualitative studies in health, government, and voluntary sectors, addressing substance use, policy implementation, and compliance. Funding sources include the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Chief Scientist Office (CSO) Scotland, and NHS Health Scotland, with grants totaling over £350,000 for projects on tobacco display bans and alcohol licensing.
He has presented findings at conferences such as the Faculty of Public Health (2013) and the Royal College of Nursing (2013), and collaborated on evaluations of alcohol sales enforcement and mental health recovery indicators.
