Andrés Guiot Isaac

Dr Andrés Guiot Isaac is an LSE Fellow in the Department of Economic History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His work focuses on the intellectual, institutional, and economic histories of development in 20th-century Latin America, with a particular emphasis on Colombia. He holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, where his doctoral dissertation, later developed into his monograph Development with Stability: Economic Technocracy in Colombia, won the Joseph Dorfman Prize. His research explores how economic expertise and state institutions shaped development policies, with attention to gender dynamics in professional economics.

Dr Guiot Isaac teaches modules on the history of economics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including EC311 and EH429. He has received teaching recognitions such as being Highly Commended for the LSE Class Teacher Award (2022/23) and nominated for the LSE Student Union Award for Outstanding Teaching (2022/23 and 2023/24).

His research interests extend to the global history of economic thought, with a focus on figures like Albert O. Hirschman. He has translated Jeremy Adelman’s biography of Hirschman into Spanish (Philósofo Mundano). His current projects include studies on women economists in Colombia (1950–70) and comparative analyses of development experts like Currie and Hirschman.

Key areas of exploration in his publications include the role of philanthropic foundations in shaping economic expertise, the interplay between development and democratic processes, and the transnational circulation of economic ideas in the Global South.
