معرفی
André J. Butler is an Industry Professor in the Department of Civil and Urban Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering since August 2022. Previously, he served as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering at Mercer University (2000–2022).
Education
- Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2000
- M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering and Environmental Management, Carnegie Mellon University, 1995
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1993
Research Focus
Dr. Butler’s scholarship centers on air quality and respiratory health. His work has examined spatio-temporal distributions of ozone and particulate matter (PM) in Georgia, advanced low-cost measurement technologies for indoor air pollution, and improved access to clean drinking water in Malawi and the Dominican Republic.
Across four recent publications, his research spans sensor-based personal exposure monitoring, household indoor air pollution surveys, bioreactor oxygen-transfer dynamics, and urban PM2.5 characterization, reflecting a consistent commitment to environmental monitoring, public health, and sustainable engineering solutions.
Awards & Recognition
- Mercer University Minority Mentor Trailblazer of the Year Award for Excellence in Teaching (2019)
- Mercer University School of Engineering Teacher of the Year (2003, 2017)
Grants & Student Mentorship
At Mercer, Dr. Butler led initiatives funded by the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan and SEED Grant programs, securing over $17,000 for projects on personal PM exposure, indoor air pollution measurement, and low-cost sensor development. These grants supported undergraduate researchers and fostered cross-disciplinary collaboration.
At NYU Tandon he continues to engage students in hands-on research on air-quality sensing and global environmental health challenges.
