Egide Kalisa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University. A multidisciplinary researcher at the intersection of environmental science and public health, he combines air quality monitoring, atmospheric modeling, and laboratory experiments to study human exposure to toxic pollutants. His work spans global contexts including Canada, Rwanda, Japan, and the UK.
- HBESc - Biology, University of Rwanda (2013)
- MSc - Air Pollution Management and Control, University of Birmingham (2014)
- PhD - Health and Environmental Science, Auckland University of Technology (2019)
Dr. Kalisa's research focuses on quantifying individual exposure to air pollutants in indoor and outdoor environments, with special emphasis on children's health in sub-Saharan Africa. He employs low-cost sensor networks and citizen science methodologies to inform air quality policy, examining intersections between transportation systems, urbanization patterns, and health outcomes. His methodology integrates chemical-biological air composition analysis with spatial-temporal modeling.
Key award highlights include
- 2023 NCST Rwanda - National Societal Challenge Recognition
- 2021 NIH Emerging Global Leader
- Commonwealth Scholarship Gold Category (2017-2019)
His publications address critical environmental health challenges: black carbon exposure in Rwandan schools (2023), pandemic curfew impacts on Kigali's air quality (2022), and comparative air sampling methodologies (2022). His work establishes frameworks for cost-effective pollution monitoring and policy implementation in resource-constrained regions.
