Michael H. Bergin is the Steinberg Family Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Duke University and Professor at Duke Kunshan University. His research focuses on air pollution’s impacts on climate and human health, particulate matter (PM), and the development of low-cost air quality sensors. He holds affiliations with Duke’s School of the Environment and the Duke Global Health Institute.
- Education: PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Carnegie Mellon University, 1995); MS in Mechanical Engineering (University of Minnesota, 1991); BS in Mechanical Engineering (University of Minnesota, 1987).
- Research Interests: PM formation, deposition, and health/climate impacts; sensor technology for air quality; aerosol radiative forcing; pollution in China/India.
His work spans field studies in Greenland, the Himalayas, and urban regions like Atlanta and China. Over 150 publications highlight contributions to aerosol science, including studies on PM toxicity, sensor networks, and the Taj Mahal’s discoloration. Bergin advises numerous graduate and undergraduate students, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration.
Recent articles explore low-cost sensors for global air quality management, Greenland’s snow albedo dynamics, and health effects of PM. He collaborates internationally, including with institutions in India, China, and Europe. Current efforts prioritize translating research into actionable solutions for cleaner air and healthier environments.
