Michael Howard Bergin is the Sternberg Family Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Duke University, with additional appointments at Duke Kunshan University and affiliations with the Duke Cancer Institute and Duke Global Health Institute. He leads a multidisciplinary research group focused on air pollution, climate, and human health.
Education:
- B.S., University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (1987)
- M.S., University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (1991)
- Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University (1995)
His research interests span particulate matter, air quality, climate impacts, renewable energy, and environmental health. He investigates how aerosols affect Earth's radiation balance, human health, and solar energy production. His work integrates field and lab studies, low-cost sensor networks, and machine learning for data analytics.
His recent publications emphasize air pollution in urban and developing regions, health impacts of PM and ozone, solar panel soiling, and innovative sensor technologies. Trends show a strong focus on interdisciplinary, global research with applications in India, China, Bolivia, and the Maldives.
Scientific Awards:
He mentors several PhD and undergraduate students and teaches courses such as Air Pollution Engineering and Master of Engineering Internship/Project. His group collaborates internationally and emphasizes hands-on, cross-cultural research experiences. They have developed low-cost air quality sensors and pioneered studies on the discoloration of the Taj Mahal due to particulate deposition.
