Professor Andrew Wei holds joint academic appointments as an Adjunct Professor (Research) at the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, Monash University, and as a Professor of Hematology at the University of Melbourne. He is also the Metcalf Family Fellow and Laboratory Head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). His clinical roles include specialization in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Royal Melbourne Hospital.
- Education: MBBS (University of Melbourne, 1993), PhD (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, 2000s)
- Awards: 2003 Albert Baikie Award, Young Investigator Award; 2004 New Investigator Award
- Leadership: Chair of the AML/MDS Working Party for the Australasian Leukaemia & Lymphoma Group since 2009
Research focuses on mechanisms of cancer cell survival pathways in leukemia, with emphasis on TP53 mutations, BH3-mimetic drugs, and clinical trials targeting measurable residual disease (MRD). His laboratory explores novel venetoclax combinations and resistance mechanisms in AML.
Recent studies include Phase I/II trials of drug combinations (e.g., venetoclax with low-dose cytarabine) and molecular MRD strategies. Over 160 publications span clinical trials, drug efficacy, and therapeutic targets in hematological malignancies.
