Professor Andrew Thorpe is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures and Professor of Modern History at the University of Leeds. His expertise spans 20th-century British political history, Labour Party dynamics, international communism, and the interplay of war and politics. He holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield (1988) and has held academic roles at the University of Exeter, including Head of History and Pro Vice Chancellor. His research emphasizes contextualizing British politics within economic, social, and international frameworks.
Education: B.A. in Medieval and Modern History (University of Birmingham, 1983); PhD in History (University of Sheffield, 1988).
Research focuses on Labour Party evolution, Communist International influence, and WWII-era party organizations. His major works include Parties at War (2009) and a seminal edition of Cecil Harmsworth’s diaries, shedding light on Liberal Party decline. Current projects explore Arthur Henderson’s legacy as a Labour leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Grants and funding include British Academy and AHRC support for projects like Parties at War. He has supervised over 20 PhD students, many of whom published impactful works. Professor Thorpe is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Higher Education Academy.
