Professor Hans van de Ven is a Fellow of the British Academy and serves as the Professor of Modern Chinese History at the University of Cambridge, affiliated with the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of East Asian Studies. He is the Director of Studies in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at St Catharine's College, where he actively supervises graduate students.

His research focuses on modern Chinese history from 1850 onwards, with specialization in:
