Professor Barak Kushner is a Professor of East Asian History at the University of Cambridge, where he served as Co-Chair of the Faculty of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (2021-2024). As a Fellow of Corpus Christi College and Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), his research spans modern Japanese and Chinese history, Sino-Japanese relations, media history, propaganda, and war crimes in East Asia.

His scholarship examines war, empire, and cultural exchange through diverse lenses including food history (e.g., Slurp! Ramen's history), media analysis (e.g., The Thought War), and legal history (e.g., The Geography of Injustice). The £1.2m European Research Council project (2013-2019) produced three volumes redefining postwar East Asian historiography.

Professor Kushner supervises PhD students researching topics like early 20th-century Sino-Japanese interactions, postwar Taiwan-Japan relations, and imperial house diplomacy. His 2013-2019 ERC project coordinated international scholars, while his 2018-2023 Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Grant advanced digital humanities research in East Asia. He currently advises six graduate students on topics spanning war crimes, political networks, and historical memory.
