Thomas P. Barrett is a Research Fellow in East Asian History at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Wolfson College Fellow. He specializes in East Asian international, diplomatic, and transnational history, focusing on the historical development of Japanese sinological traditions and the institutionalization of Western diplomatic practices in late Qing and Republican China. His doctoral thesis on foreign advisors in Qing legations won the 2023 Bayly Prize.

- PhD: University of Tokyo & Oxford (supervised by Murata Yūjirō, Kawashima Shin, and Henrietta Harrison)
Research Interests: He investigates how Western diplomatic systems were integrated into Qing China, the role of foreign advisors in shaping modern Chinese diplomacy, and promoting academic exchange between Japanese and international scholars. He also translates Japanese academic works to enhance global accessibility.
