Dr Andrew Seaton is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in History at University College London (UCL). Previously, he held the Plumer Junior Research Fellowship in History at St Anne's College, University of Oxford. He earned a PhD in History from New York University (2021), an MA in the History of Science, Technology and Medicine from King’s College London, and a BA in History from the University of Oxford.
His research focuses on modern British history, with specializations in political history, social history, the history of medicine, and environmental history. His first book, Our NHS: A History of Britain's Best-Loved Institution (2023), explores the NHS's role in British identity and its resilience against neoliberal trends, winning the Morris D. Forkosch Prize. His current project, The Ends of Coal, examines Britain’s coal legacy from 1800 to present, linking environmental, economic, and imperial histories.
Andrew’s work bridges academia and public engagement, featuring in major media outlets like The New York Times, BBC Radio 4, and Le Monde. He advocates for accessibility in higher education, volunteering with programs supporting first-generation students. His research has been supported by fellowships from institutions such as the History & Political Economy Project and the American Philosophical Society.
