Professor Morrall’s research explores the intersection of art, science, and humanism in Renaissance Europe. He examines how elite craftsmen and their creations shaped the intellectual aspirations of Kunstkammer collections and influenced philosophical inquiries into the natural world. His publications also address Protestant identity, domestic decoration, and the sociological role of artisans in early modern Germany.
Recent publications highlight trends in Kunstkammer studies, Renaissance ornament theory, and scientific-artistic collaborations. His 2023 article on Christoph Schissler’s Horologium Ahaz bridges biblical miracles and astronomical instruments, while his 2019 edited volume on religious materiality expands the discourse on sacred objects. He has also contributed to debates on urban craftsmanship and court patronage.
