Andrew Mendelsohn

Dr. Andrew Mendelsohn is a Professor in the School of History at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), specializing in the History of Science and Medicine. He joined QMUL in 2012 with over 20 years of international academic experience, including positions at Harvard, Princeton, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin, and Imperial College London. His research focuses on the interplay between knowledge production, governance, and observation practices in medicine, science, and society across Europe from the 16th to the 20th centuries.

Key research interests include the history of medical expertise, civic governance, and the role of observation in shaping scientific and administrative practices. He co-leads an ERC-funded project on 'How Physicians Know, 1500–1950' with Volker Hess, fostering collaboration between QMUL and Charité University Medicine Berlin. His work also explores writing practices (paper technology), industrialization of life sciences, and case-based methodologies in medicine and natural history.

Publications include edited volumes like Civic Medicine: Physician, Polity, and Pen in Early Modern Europe (2020) and numerous articles on topics such as bacteriological revolutions, medical accountability, and early modern urban science. His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on expertise and evidence-based policy-making.

Dr. Mendelsohn supervises doctoral students in areas like governance and public health, environmental sciences, and the history of legal and medical knowledge. He has held leadership roles, including head of Imperial College’s Centre for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine.
