Margaret Pelling is a Senior Associate Member at the University of Oxford's Faculty of History and affiliated with the Centre for the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology. Her research focuses on medical practitioners in early modern England, particularly barbers and barber-surgeons, and their societal roles. She is currently working on a book exploring the cultural functions of barbers from 1500 to 2000. Additional research interests include 17th-century London statistician John Graunt and 19th-century public health theories pre-dating the bacteriological revolution, with studies on figures like William Farr, John Snow, and William Budd.
Her work bridges social history and medical history, analyzing how medical practices and epidemiological understandings evolved within broader cultural and religious contexts. She critiques historical narratives by contextualizing key figures against prevailing societal attitudes of their time.
