Pedro Cardim is an Associate Professor at the Departamento de História (DH) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he is also a researcher at CHAM - Centro de Humanidades. His work focuses on the history of early modern Iberian polities, Portuguese imperial rule in the Atlantic, political participation through representative assemblies, and the memory of colonial domination. He accepts PhD students and has an h-index of 6 (Scopus).
Research Interests:
- Early modern Iberian Atlantic history and imperial formations;
- Political and administrative reforms in 17th-18th century Portugal;
- Legal/moral categories in Colonial Brazil and Indigenous resistance;
- Portuguese imperial memory and civic engagement.
Recent Publications (2024): Analyzed law-making in Iberian Asia, reviewed Portuguese governance in Brazil, contributed biographies to the Dicionário Histórico-Biográfico da Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, and critiqued Philip II’s imperial architecture. His work bridges legal history, political thought, and colonial studies.
Collaborations & Activities:
- Co-edited Political Thought in Portugal and its Empire (1500-1800) (Cambridge, 2021);
- Organized academic events like 'Tribute to António Manuel Hespanha' (2022);
- Participated in conferences on Iberian empires (2023), 'Tiempos de los Imperios' (2023), and 'Cortes' (2023).
