Andrew Lynch

Andrew Lynch is a Professor and currently serves as Dean at UNSW Law & Justice, affiliated with the School of Global & Public Law. He previously held roles as Head of School and Deputy Dean of the Law School. His academic background includes an LLB (Hons), LLM (QUT), and PhD (UNSW).

He specializes in Australian constitutional law, with research focusing on federalism, judicial dissent, judicial appointments, and legal responses to terrorism. His work includes authoring influential books such as Blackshield & Williams’ Australian Constitutional Law and Theory and Australia's Greatest Judicial Crisis - The Tim Carmody Affair.

His articles and grants reflect expertise in constitutional interpretation, judicial dynamics, and federal reform. Notable grants include ARC-funded projects on cooperative federalism and 21st-century federal frameworks. He has been a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and a member of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration.

Lynch directed the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law’s Judiciary Project until 2013 and continues related research. His contributions span legal education, counter-terrorism policy, and institutional judicial dynamics, with a focus on balancing security and constitutional values.
