Andrew Laird is the John Rowe Workman Distinguished Professor of Classics and Humanities and Professor of Hispanic Studies at Brown University, serving as Director of the Center for the Study of the Early Modern World. He holds a DPhil from Oxford University (1992), an MA from King's College (1987), and a BA from Oxford (1986). His research bridges classical antiquity, the European Renaissance, and colonial Latin America, focusing on the intersection of classical traditions with indigenous intellectual practices. Laird's work examines how Renaissance humanism influenced colonial Mexico, particularly through the Latin writings of Indigenous scholars like Juan de Tlaxcala. His 2024 book Aztec Latin highlights the intellectual contributions of native Mexican authors to early modern history. Recent projects include editing Petrarch’s Africa for the Harvard I Tatti Renaissance Library and lecturing globally on topics like colonial Latin pedagogy and the reception of Aristotle. Affiliations include the Cogut Institute for the Humanities and the Department of Hispanic Studies. His interdisciplinary approach integrates literary analysis with historical and cultural studies, emphasizing colonial-era bilingualism and the transmission of classical knowledge in the Americas.
