Professor Cacho's research centers on Renaissance and Baroque literary cultures across Iberia and colonial Latin America, with particular emphasis on poetic genres including burlesque and epic traditions. His scholarship explores Francisco de Quevedo's works through interdisciplinary lenses incorporating art theory and memory systems, while also investigating cultural transmission mechanisms in the New World. The relationship between visual arts and literature forms another critical axis of his work, especially regarding painters Diego Velázquez and Juan de Valdés Leal. His recent focus on colonial poetry examines the formation of literary communities throughout Spanish America.
Analysis of his publication record reveals consistent scholarly engagement with early modern Hispanic literary production, increasingly emphasizing transatlantic cultural exchanges and colonial poetic innovations. The interdisciplinary nature of his work bridges literary analysis with art history, architectural studies, and cultural anthropology, demonstrating methodological versatility while maintaining core focus on textual traditions.
His distinguished contributions have been recognized through:
- Philip Leverhulme Prize
- SSHRC Fellowship
- Newton Trust Fellowship
- British Academy Fellowship
- I Tatti Fellowship
Professor Cacho actively supervises doctoral candidates including Carlos Crespo and welcomes new PhD students specializing in early modern literatures and colonial studies. His research program has received substantial support from major funding bodies including the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Newton Trust, British Academy, and I Tatti Center for Renaissance Studies. Current projects focus on literary community formation in colonial Spanish America and interdisciplinary approaches to early modern cultural production.
Through leadership in the Cambridge Hispanic and Lusophone Research Seminars (CHLRS) and collaborative projects with scholars like Imogen Choi and Anne Holloway, he maintains active engagement with international academic networks. His editorial work on major reference volumes demonstrates commitment to shaping the field's methodological frameworks for future scholarship.
