Andrew Johnson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Design for Publishing at the University of East Anglia. He has lectured since 2006, specializing in editorial design and supporting courses in Graphic Design and Graphic Communication. With over 30 years of professional experience, he has held roles as art director at Blueprint, V&A Magazine, and as a founding partner of East Publishing. His work focuses on arts and culture publications, emphasizing narrative-driven design across print and digital media.
Education: B.A. Graphic Design (University of Brighton, 1987–90), M.A. (Royal College of Art, 1992).
Research interests include editorial design fundamentals, visual storytelling for diverse audiences, and the intersection of traditional and digital publishing. Recent projects include exhibition catalogs for the Sainsbury Centre and collaborations with institutions like the National Trust and Sotheby’s.
Key publications span art history and cultural topics, with notable works such as Empowering Art (2023) and Superstructure (2018). Awards include the 2019 Association of Cultural Enterprises Award and multiple East Anglian Book Awards.
Grants and collaborations include projects with the Sainsbury Research Unit and Norwich Castle Museum. He advises on exhibition design and continues to contribute to the arts sector through consulting roles.
