Dr. Andrew Harms is an Applied Music Instructor in Trumpet at Colby College. He is a distinguished performer, teacher, and researcher in brass music. Dr. Harms performs with orchestras such as the Portland Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and Lexington Symphony. His pedagogical work has been featured in the Journal of the International Trumpet Guild, and he has contributed to music education through roles at Colby College, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and New England Music Camp. He maintains a private teaching studio across the U.S. and has led initiatives like the Stan Whitlock Memorial Youth Brass Competition. Beyond music, he is a certified personal trainer and athlete, engaging in CrossFit, mountaineering, and endurance sports.
Dr. Harms holds a doctorate and has served on the boards of the North American Brass Band Association and New England Brass Band. His research interests include brass instrument techniques, orchestral performance practices, and music pedagogy. He actively writes about topics such as rotary trumpet mouthpieces, audition strategies, and musical literacy challenges in higher education.
His professional activities extend to consortiums for new compositions and advocacy for rigorous musical training. He balances his expertise in music with a passion for physical fitness, blending academic and athletic disciplines.
