Professor Andrew Groves serves as Professor of Fashion Design at the University of Westminster, where he founded the Westminster Menswear Archive (WMA) in 2016. The WMA houses over 3,000 garments and functions as a critical resource for academics, designers, and industry professionals examining menswear from workwear to high fashion.
His research explores the cultural, historical, and material dimensions of menswear through object-based methodologies. Key interests include menswear archives, football casual subcultures, and how working-class men construct shared masculine identities through dress. His exhibitions like 'Umbro 100' (2024) and 'Invisible Men' (2019) have reshaped public understanding of menswear's significance.
Professor Groves has received distinguished recognition for his contributions to fashion history:
- ICOM Costume 60th Anniversary Award
- ICOM Costume Award - Highly commended
He has secured over £560,000 in research funding including £350,000 from the Quintin Hogg Trust for the WMA's establishment and £167,000 from Research England for digital outreach. His AHRC-funded 'Locating the Absent Shadow' project (2022-2024) examines British-Italian menswear connections. As a supervisor, he guides research on material culture and object-based design processes.
Professor Groves directs the Westminster Menswear Archive and collaborates internationally through projects like the 'Locating Menswear' network, while also providing consultancy to brands including Massimo Osti Studio and serving on the British Fashion Council’s Colleges Council.
