Andrew Freear is the Wiatt Professor and Director of Rural Studio at Auburn University’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture. Based in Newbern, Alabama, he oversees a design-build program focused on sustainable rural development and community engagement.

His research emphasizes rural community development, building technology, and affordable housing. Through Rural Studio, he supervises student-led projects addressing systemic inequities in the American South, prioritizing ecological and social sustainability.

Rural Studio’s pedagogy under Freear involves immersive, context-based education where students collaborate with local communities to design and construct infrastructure, homes, and public spaces. The program has completed over 220 projects in Hale County’s Black Belt region.
