Andrew David Berti, Pharm.D., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Wayne State University's Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. His research focuses on optimizing antibiotic combinations for challenging bacterial infections, particularly Staphylococcus aureus.
- 2016 – Postdoctoral Fellowship, Antistaphylococcal Pharmacotherapy, University of Wisconsin-Madison
- 2014 – Pharm.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison
- 2009 – Ph.D., Bacteriology, University of Wisconsin-Madison
- 2003 – B.S., Microbiology, University of Rochester
Dr. Berti’s research integrates pharmacokinetics, bacteriology, molecular biology, and recombinant genetics to determine when and why antibiotic combinations improve patient outcomes. He also studies bacterial metabolism, antimicrobial resistance, and tolerance mechanisms.
His recent publications explore AI applications in drug discovery, proteomic changes in resistant bacteria, and synergy between beta-lactams and other antibiotics. Research trends emphasize Staphylococcus aureus, pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling, and combating antibiotic tolerance/resistance.
- 2022: WSU College of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year
- 2014: Zeeh Pharmaceutical Station Director’s Award
- 2014: ICAAC Infectious Disease Fellow
- 2014: Borchardt Scholar
- 2013: AACP Walmart Scholar
Dr. Berti mentors students and trainees in bacterial metabolism and antifectives research. He teaches pharmacokinetics courses and leads the Berti Lab, which investigates rational antibiotic combination therapy.
