Andrew Baker serves as BHF Professor of Translational Cardiovascular Sciences and Gustav Born Chair of Vascular Biology at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Cardiovascular Science, where he leads research and directs the Centre as Head of Research.
His educational background includes a BSc (Hons) and PhD. Research focuses on vascular damage mechanisms and regenerative therapies, specifically:
- Non-coding RNA pathways in vascular smooth muscle/endothelial cells
- Gene therapy for coronary artery bypass graft failure
- Stem cell-derived endothelial regeneration for ischemic conditions
His work bridges basic science and clinical translation through innovative RNA/cell-based interventions.
Major recognitions include:
- Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA)
- Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC)
- Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE)
- BHF Professorship
Professor Baker actively mentors researchers through his 15+ member lab team and welcomes new PhD students. His group operates within Edinburgh BioQuarter's Queen's Medical Research Institute, advancing vascular regeneration projects with significant British Heart Foundation funding. Current initiatives include clinical-stage gene therapy development and stem cell specification mechanisms.
