Andrew Anastasi is a Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University, holding the History & Political Economy Postdoctoral Fellowship. His work focuses on social movements, political theory, and historical sociology, particularly exploring the intersections of radical activism and state policies. He earned a Ph.D. in Sociology and Critical Theory from The Graduate Center, CUNY (2022).
Research interests include the Black Panther Party’s engagement with federal anti-poverty programs, 20th-century Marxist theory (especially Mario Tronti), and the dynamics of New Left movements. His book The Other Anti-War Movement examines how marginalized groups navigated state structures, while The Weapon of Organization translates Tronti’s ideas for Anglophone audiences.
Teaching spans 14 years across secondary and higher education, including full-time visiting professor roles at Barnard College and courses at Fordham University. He has held research residencies at the Schomburg Center (NYPL) and the University of Bologna’s Department of the Arts. His advocacy extends to youth-led campaigns against the school-to-prison pipeline in Washington D.C. schools.
