Andrew Anastasi is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Sociology at Barnard College, Columbia University. He specializes in historical sociology and critical theory, focusing on social movements and capitalist states during the 1960s-70s. His current book project examines the interplay between the Black Panther Party and federal anti-poverty initiatives. He also serves as an affiliate faculty member at Columbia’s Institute for Comparative Literature and Society.
Education: Ph.D. in Sociology & Critical Theory (CUNY Graduate Center, 2022); B.A. in Media & Cultural Studies (Macalester College).
Research interests include racial justice, education equity, and the political economy of social movements. His work has been published in Theory and Society, Journal of Historical Sociology, and Black Perspectives. He translates key Marxist texts and edits Viewpoint Magazine. Past roles include teaching at Fordham University and supporting youth-led campaigns against the school-to-prison pipeline in Washington, D.C.
Recognitions include residencies at the Schomburg Center and University of Bologna. His writings frequently address contemporary social uprisings, such as the George Floyd protests of 2020.
