Professor Andreas Willi is the Diebold Professor of Comparative Philology at the University of Oxford, holding a dual affiliation between the Faculty of Classics and the Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics. He is also a Fellow of Worcester College and a member of the British Academy (elected 2020). His research focuses on sociolinguistic variation in Ancient Greek, language contact, and the prehistory of the Greek verbal system, with additional expertise in Indo-European linguistics and Classical literature. Willi earned his doctorate at Oxford and has held academic positions at the University of Basel and the Swiss Institute in Rome before returning to Oxford in 2005.
Willi’s educational background includes studies in Classics, Slavonic languages, and Historical-Comparative Linguistics at the Universities of Basel, Lausanne, Fribourg (Switzerland), and the University of Michigan. He is an active editor of Glotta: Zeitschrift für griechische und lateinische Sprache and has authored monographs on Ancient Greek linguistic variation and the origins of the Greek verb. His work bridges linguistic analysis with classical textual studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to ancient language and culture.
His research interests span sociolinguistic dynamics in Ancient Greek, the interface between language and literature in the ancient world, and the historical development of the Greek verbal system. He also supervises doctoral students in Ancient Greek linguistics and collaborates on projects involving other ancient Indo-European languages like Latin and Sabellic. Willi’s contributions to scholarship include over 100 peer-reviewed articles, edited volumes, and reviews, reflecting his leadership in comparative philology and historical linguistics.
Key awards include his British Academy Fellowship, recognizing his contributions to Classics and linguistics. Willi’s academic output combines rigorous philological methods with broader theoretical perspectives, making him a pivotal figure in the study of ancient languages and their cultural contexts.
