Andreas Piel

Prof. Dr. Andreas Piel serves as Professor for Business Administration, especially Accounting at the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) and has been Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration and Industrial Engineering (FWW) since October 2015. Previously, he served as Vice Dean (2014-2015) and Dean of Studies for the Bachelor of Business Administration program (2008-2015). His academic career at HTWK Leipzig began in October 2003.

Dr. Piel earned his doctorate in political science from the Free University of Berlin in 1996, following his studies in Business Administration at the same institution where he obtained his Diplom-Kaufmann degree. His educational background also includes training as a merchant in the real estate and housing industry in Berlin.

Professor Piel specializes in Accounting and Tax Law, with a teaching philosophy focused on making these subjects practical and relevant to students. His research interests center on financial accounting systems, tax compliance, business taxation, and real estate taxation. He emphasizes practical application, stating: 'As soon as the basics are laid and the 'technique' has been taught, I show in my courses what effects can be achieved through various design possibilities.'

His publication record demonstrates consistent scholarly activity with multiple editions of textbooks on accounting and tax law spanning two decades. These works primarily focus on practical applications of accounting principles and tax regulations, with emphasis on BilMoG (German Accounting Reform Act) implementation. The publications show a clear progression in addressing evolving accounting standards and tax regulations in Germany.

Throughout his career, Professor Piel has maintained strong connections between academic work and business practice. Before joining HTWK Leipzig, he worked as a commercial manager at a travel agency in Berlin (1992-1995) and as an employee in a tax office (1996-1998). Since 1992, he has also worked as a freelance management consultant and has held various teaching assignments at universities of applied sciences, vocational academies, and chambers of commerce.

Professor Piel is affiliated with the Department of Accounting and Controlling within the Faculty of Business Administration and Industrial Engineering. His work contributes to the faculty's emphasis on connecting teaching, research, and business practice through application-oriented projects that facilitate knowledge transfer between industry and academia.
