Kurt Kawafuchi is a Lecturer of Accounting at the School of Accountancy, Shidler College of Business, University of Hawaii. He holds dual credentials as an Attorney at Law and CPA (not in public practice). His professional experience includes roles as Principal/Partner at Hochman, Salkin, Rettig, Toscher & Perez PC (2010-2015), Director of Taxation at the State of Hawaii Department of Taxation (2002-2010), and Trial Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division (1986-1992).
Research interests focus on taxation law and policy, particularly estate/gift taxation, multistate tax issues, and partnership taxation. His notable publication is a comprehensive guide to Hawaii taxation (2016-2020), co-authored with Alan Yee and Duane Akamine. Professional involvement includes membership on the School of Accountancy Advisory Board and leadership roles in legal/CPA firms across Hawaii and California.
Teaches graduate courses in advanced taxation topics including tax of partnerships, estate planning, and multijurisdictional taxation. Combines legal expertise with accounting education to address complex tax challenges faced by professionals.
