Andreas Marcou

Dr. Andreas Marcou is an Assistant Professor in Legal Theory and the LLB Course Leader at the School of Law, University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus. He holds a PhD in Law from Queen Mary University of London (2020), an MA in Legal and Political Theory from University College London (2014), and an LLB in Law from Queen Mary University of London (2013). His research focuses on legal theory, EU law, and democratic legitimacy, particularly the interplay between democracy, populism, and the rule of law.

**Research Interests:**

His work explores theories of democracy and legitimacy at national and European levels, including questions of democratic authority, justified lawbreaking, and civil disobedience. He has published on topics such as EU fundamental rights conditionality, the crisis of liberal democracy in Cyprus, and the role of courts in populist contexts.

**Research Roles & Projects:**

He currently leads the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence CRoLEV (2022–2025), managing its research outputs, events, and edited volumes. He also contributes to the Horizon Europe-funded PREPARED project, focusing on pandemic governance. His administrative roles include membership in the ASQAC (Academic Standards and Quality Assurance Committee) and past roles in the Research and Innovation Committee at UCLan Cyprus.

**Grants & Advising:**

**Labs & Collaborations:**

He collaborates with ICLAIM and the Centre for Law, Democracy, and Society, editing the Interdisciplinary Journal of Populism and contributing policy briefs on EU law and governance.
