Dr. Andrea Pearson is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Art at American University, specializing in the visual culture of late medieval and early modern northern Europe. With a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, an MA from the University of Iowa, and a BA from Augustana College, she has established herself as a leading scholar in her field through extensive research and publications.
Her research focuses on women, gender, and sexuality in the southern Low Countries, with particular emphasis on Burgundian devotional art and Netherlandish visual culture. Pearson's work bridges art historical analysis with gender studies, exploring how visual representations construct and challenge notions of identity, authority, and morality in pre-modern Europe. Her methodological approach combines close visual analysis with historical contextualization to reveal the complex social and religious dynamics embedded in artistic production.
Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with evolving themes in Northern Renaissance art, particularly the intersection of gender, power, and religious practice. Recent work has increasingly focused on the enigmatic Housebook Master and the representation of sensory experience in devotional contexts, showing her continued innovation in the field.
