Andrea Paz Velez is an Associate Professor at the Université de Montréal's Department of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on biogeography, biodiversity patterns, and environmental drivers of species distribution. She holds a PhD in Biology from the City University of New York (2021), a Master in Biological Sciences from Universidad de los Andes (2012), and a B.S. in Biology from the same university (2010).
- Affiliations:
- Membre du CSBQ (Centre de la science de la biodiversité du Québec)
- Lead researcher on CRSNG-funded projects on biodiversity correlates (2025–2031)
Her research explores how environmental variables like precipitation and topography shape biodiversity in ecosystems such as the Atlantic Forest. Notable contributions include developing tools like Wallace EcoMod for species distribution modeling and Treemendous for taxonomic standardization. She advocates for equity in science, particularly addressing gender disparities in Colombian research institutions.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on ecology and environment (BIO-1803), contributing to programs in biology, mathematics, and environmental studies. Her work bridges ecology and conservation, emphasizing real-time biodiversity monitoring and interdisciplinary collaboration.
