Colin Favret is a Full Professor at the University of Montreal, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Biological Sciences. He leads the Station de biologie des Laurentides and is a member of the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale and the Centre de la science de la biodiversité du Québec. His research focuses on insect systematics, biodiversity, and the evolution of plant-feeding insects, particularly aphids. He has supervised numerous graduate students and led major projects funded by organizations like the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Fonds de recherche du Québec.
Research Interests: Favret’s lab explores aphid taxonomy, evolutionary biology, and biodiversity through molecular and morphological approaches. They investigate host-plant associations, species discovery, and the impacts of environmental interactions on insect populations. Projects include cybertaxonomy initiatives and biodiversity conservation strategies using citizen science and AI tools.
Grants & Projects: Recent grants include the Cybertaxonomic insect species exploration (2024–2030) and Integrating AI-based tools for biodiversity conservation (2022–2025). He has also led projects on insect biodiversity quantification and entomopathology in grain farming.
Awards: Recognized with the Prix d'excellence en enseignement (2016) for teaching excellence. His work contributes to global databases like the Aphid Species File and the Ouellet-Robert Entomological Collection.
Labs & Teams: Favret’s lab focuses on integrating modern techniques (e.g., DNA barcoding, microscopy) with traditional taxonomy. Collaborations include the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science and international networks for aphid research.
