Simon Joly is an Associate Professor at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Biological Sciences. He leads the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale and specializes in plant evolution, combining molecular biology, phylogenetics, and ecological studies. His research focuses on floral evolution, speciation, and biodiversity conservation. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Université de Montréal (2006).
Education:
- Ph.D. in Biology, Université de Montréal (2006)
Research Interests: His work explores plant evolution through genomic and ecological lenses, including studies on pollination systems, hybridization, and urban environmental impacts. Key topics include floral adaptation, phylogenetic analysis, and conservation strategies for threatened species.
Grants & Projects:
- Evolution of flowers in urban environments (2024–2030), funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
- Leading the Centre de la science de la biodiversité du Québec (2013–2020), supported by Fonds de recherche du Québec.
- Multiple studies on Gesneriaceae species and phylogenetic methods, funded by NSERC and international collaborations.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Plant Evolution Lab at the Montreal Botanical Garden, emphasizing interdisciplinary research in plant genetics and ecology.
