Andrea Hilland, KC is an Assistant Professor at the Peter A. Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia. A member of the Nuxalk Nation, her research focuses on Indigenous laws, Aboriginal rights, and environmental regulation, challenging colonial legal frameworks while advocating for Indigenous legal resurgence. She holds BA, JD, and LLM degrees from UBC.
Previously, she served as Associate Director of Indigenous Legal Studies (2008–2012) and practiced law advocating for First Nations' rights. Her affiliations include the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies and the Centre for Law and the Environment. Key research areas include legal ethics, multi-juridical systems, and decolonizing environmental governance.
Teaching focuses on courses like Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and Legal Ethics, emphasizing critical engagement with colonial legal structures. She emphasizes empathy and systemic reform in legal education, aligning with TRC Calls to Action. Recent contributions include developing the Indigenous Intercultural Course for legal regulators.
Awards include the honor of King's Counsel (2021). Her work integrates Indigenous legal strategies with Canadian law to advance reconciliation and ecological justice.
