Professor Gordon Christie is a full-time faculty member at the Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia, specializing in Aboriginal and Indigenous law, legal theory, and tort law. He holds an LL.B. from the University of Victoria and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to joining UBC in 2004, he served as an Assistant Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School and directed its Intensive Program in Aboriginal Lands, Resources, and Governments.
His research focuses on decolonizing Canadian jurisprudence, Indigenous self-determination, UNDRIP implementation, and the Crown’s duty to consult Indigenous groups. Christie has been instrumental in developing UBC’s specialization in Aboriginal Law and the Indigenous Settler Legal Relations course. He is recognized for advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and mentoring Indigenous faculty.
Christie’s publications analyze intersections of law, Indigenous rights, and colonialism, with notable work on UNDRIP, treaty interpretation, and Aboriginal citizenship. He received the Jim Taylor, QC Faculty Scholar Award (2023/24) for his exceptional contributions to legal education and advocacy for Indigenous justice.
