Andrea Emberly is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Conservatorium of Music, The University of Western Australia. She holds a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of Washington (2009), alongside degrees from Illinois State University and the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on children’s musical cultures in South Africa, particularly in Venda and Pedi communities, exploring intersections of local and global influences. She has conducted fieldwork in South Africa and contributed to projects like the Communicative Human Musicality Project. Her work emphasizes children as active participants in research, using video and photographic tools to document their musical histories. She also examines music in children’s edutainment, such as Sesame Street’s South African adaptation, Takalani Sesame.
