Luis Gimenez Amoros is a Visiting Professor at the University of Cologne's Global South Studies Center (GSSC), where he contributes to interdisciplinary research on music and cultural studies. During October 2023 to January 2024, he was affiliated with the University of Western Cape, Cape Town, furthering his work in ethnomusicology.
His research focuses on postcolonial music studies, transcultural musical practices, and the intersection of music with identity and cultural heritage. Key areas include Afro-Asian musical traditions, Saharawi and Zimbabwean music, and the role of sound archives in cultural revitalization. Recent work examines transnational musical representations (e.g., Nubenegra Records) and the political dimensions of music in postcolonial contexts.
His publications analyze topics like the orchestration of Zimbabwean postcolonial soundscapes, the digital preservation of African music archives, and the ethnomusicological critique of Orientalism. He has engaged with scholars to explore bimusicality and the socio-political narratives embedded in music genres like haul and mbira.
Amoros’s work bridges academic research with practical engagement, advocating for culturally sensitive approaches to music archiving and transnational cultural collaboration. His studies highlight music as a lens for understanding power dynamics, identity formation, and historical memory across Africa and the Mediterranean.
