Anders Olofsgård is an Associate Professor at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) and Deputy Director of the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE). He also holds an affiliation as Professor at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service and McDonough School of Business. He earned his Ph.D. in Economics from Stockholm University in 2001, specializing in political economy and development. His research focuses on the political economy of Eastern Europe, foreign aid effectiveness, and post-conflict recovery, with significant contributions to journals like the Journal of the European Economic Association and American Political Science Review.
He serves as a prominent commentator on Swedish media, addressing issues such as Ukraine's geopolitical challenges and the economic impacts of sanctions on Russia. His policy work includes collaborations with the IMF, World Bank, USAID, and the Swedish government. He leads SITE, which examines transition economies and development challenges, and contributes to the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets. His research spans experimental studies in education (e.g., textbook incentives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and institutional analyses of authoritarian regimes.
Key areas of focus include the intersection of political instability and economic policy, the design of effective foreign aid strategies, and the macroeconomic consequences of protracted conflicts. He advises on development finance innovations, such as Islamic climate finance, and analyzes geopolitical dynamics influencing global aid allocation.
