Ana Costa-Pereira is a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, affiliated with the Department of Surgery and Cancer within the Faculty of Medicine. She serves as Director of the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication and leads educational innovation initiatives, including the Lab Pods concept for biomedical laboratory teaching.
- Education: BSc (Hons) Biochemistry (University College Cork), PhD in Biochemistry (University College Cork), PG Cert ULT (2016), PG Dip ULT (2018), MEd in University Learning and Teaching (2022)
Her research focuses on cytokine signaling networks in cancer, particularly the dual roles of Janus kinases (JAKs) and signal transducers (STATs) in tumor progression and inflammation. She investigates mechanisms to modulate these pathways for cancer therapies and studies death receptor signaling via TRAIL and Fas (CD95) to induce apoptosis selectively in cancer cells.
Her educational contributions include developing the Lab Pods model for experiential learning, flipped teaching modules in immunology and cancer biology, and student-centric online assessment tools. Her work challenges traditional laboratory pedagogy to improve real-world skills for medical bioscience undergraduates.
- Scientific Awards: Senior Fellowship Higher Education Academy (2024)
Dr. Costa-Pereira leads undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the BSc Medical Biosciences curriculum (2016–2020), and serves as an external PhD examiner at institutions such as Monash University and University of Cambridge. She has pioneered transformative laboratory education strategies and advocates for blended, student-centered pedagogy.
