Prof. Dr. Ana Martin-Villalba is a W3 Professor and Division Head at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) since 2011, leading the Department of Molecular Neurobiology. She combines her academic role with research on neurobiology, stem cell signaling, and glioblastoma.
- Education: MD from University of Heidelberg (1998) and Murcia (1995), Habilitation (2007) at Heidelberg, and Master of Management (2011) from St. Gallen.
Her research focuses on CD95 signaling in neural stem cells, glioblastoma progression, and neurodegeneration. She has pioneered work on the role of CD95 in apoptosis regulation, neurovascular development, and immune cell infiltration. Her team investigates how cellular architecture and quiescence affect stem cell behavior in aging and disease.
Her publications span Neuroscience, Oncology, and Molecular Biology, with recurring themes in CD95-mediated signaling, neural stem cell dynamics, and tumor microenvironment interactions. Key contributions include understanding CD95's dual role in apoptosis and survival, as well as its impact on glioblastoma invasion.
Scientific Awards and Grants:
- ERC Consolidator Grant (2018)
- Heinz Maier Leibnitz-Preis (2006)
- Paul Ehrlich Young Investigator Award (2006)
- DAAD Fellowship (1997)
She has served as reviewer for top journals (Nature, Science, Cell Stem Cell) and grant agencies (DFG, ANR, Humboldt Foundation). Her patents focus on CD95 signaling inhibitors for cancer and CNS trauma therapies.
