Her research centers on addiction treatment for individuals with complex needs, particularly through assertive outreach models. She specializes in economic and mixed-methods evaluation of complex interventions, qualitative research, and implementation science in primary and specialist care. Her work addresses barriers to care, patient and public involvement (PPI), and improving service delivery for alcohol use disorders.
The recent publications reflect a strong focus on evaluating and improving brief interventions and assertive outreach in primary and emergency care settings. Key themes include implementation in multi-country contexts (e.g., ODHIN), health economics, provider behavior, and systemic service mapping. Her work spans randomized controlled trials, national surveys, and qualitative assessments, contributing to evidence-based policy and clinical practice.
Scientific Awards:
- Winston Churchill Memorial Trust travelling fellowship (2017) – for studying high-need, high-cost patient services in the United States
Dr. Wolstenholme has served as a co-investigator on major clinical trials, including the AAOT trial, and acts as the PPI champion for the alcohol theme in NIHR ARC South London. Her previous roles in government (Department of Health, Department for Education and Skills) and public health agencies (National Treatment Agency, Public Health England) have strengthened her expertise in translating research into policy. She is an active member of the Alcohol Research Group led by Professor Colin Drummond, contributing to grant-funded, multidisciplinary research on substance misuse interventions.
The Alcohol Research Group, based in the Department of Addictions, conducts cutting-edge research on alcohol consumption, health care delivery, and policy impact, with a strong emphasis on real-world implementation and service improvement.
