Amy Downing serves as Associate Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at the University of Leeds' School of Medicine and heads the Cancer Epidemiology Group within the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's. Her research leverages population-level health data to optimize cancer care pathways and survivorship outcomes, with emphasis on colorectal and bladder cancers.
Education:
- PhD in Epidemiology, University of Birmingham
- BSc (Hons) Human Biology (2:1), Loughborough University
Dr. Downing specializes in cancer epidemiology using routine health data linkage, patient-reported outcomes, and survivorship analysis. Her work addresses health inequalities, treatment decision-making, and quality-of-life impacts across colorectal, bladder, and prostate cancers. Current methodologies integrate real-world data with novel digital tools like ecological momentary assessment for dynamic patient monitoring.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals dominant themes in colorectal cancer intelligence (CORECT-R), bladder cancer survivorship (Life And Bladder Cancer study), and data linkage innovation. She consistently examines health disparities, treatment regret, stoma adaptation, and chemoprevention mechanisms, increasingly incorporating AI-driven text analysis of patient feedback.
Research Leadership:
- CORECT-R: Cancer Research UK-funded colorectal cancer intelligence hub
- Life And Bladder Cancer: Yorkshire Cancer Research-funded longitudinal PRO study
- Yorkshire Bowel Cancer Improvement Programme: Regional care optimization initiative
Dr. Downing supervises PhD and MSc students including Charlotte Sturley, and leads cross-institutional collaborations through the Cancer Survivor Intelligence Group and Pathology and Data Analytics team. Her work directly informs NHS service improvements for cancer survivors through evidence-based survivorship frameworks.
