Professor Jenny Barrett is a leading academic in statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health and the School of Medicine. She is based at the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics and has been a Professor since 2011, leading a statistical research group since 2000. Her work spans multiple complex diseases, including melanoma, rheumatoid arthritis, giant cell arteritis, and colorectal cancer.
Education:
- PhD in Statistical Genetics, University of Sheffield, 1993
- MSc in Statistics, University of Sheffield, 1990
- BA in Mathematics and Philosophy, University of Oxford, 1976
Her research focuses on the development and application of advanced statistical methods in genetic studies, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS), fine-mapping, transcriptomic analysis, and risk modeling. She plays a key role in major international consortia such as GenoMEL, MELGEN, MATURA, MRC Target, and CORECT-R, contributing to biomarker discovery and personalized treatment strategies.
The recent publications highlight a strong trend in translational biostatistics, integrating genomic data with clinical outcomes to predict disease risk and treatment response. Her work bridges methodological innovation with real-world applications in oncology, rheumatology, and vascular inflammation.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society
- Fellow member of the International Genetic Epidemiology Society
Professor Barrett is actively involved in postgraduate education, leading a module in genetic epidemiology and supervising multiple PhD students across diverse research areas. She has secured significant collaborative funding through national and international consortia, reflecting her leadership in data-driven medical research. Her research group operates within the Leeds Institute of Medical Research at St James's and the Statistics Research Group, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
