Amy A. Hasinoff is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her work focuses on the intersection of gender, sexuality, and digital media, with particular attention to issues of consent, privacy, and harm prevention in online contexts.
Dr. Hasinoff earned her PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010 and her BA from McGill University in 2005. Her academic journey has positioned her as a leading scholar in digital media studies with a focus on gender and sexuality.
Her research interests span new media studies, gender and sexuality in digital contexts, sexting practices, image-based sexual abuse, technology and sexual violence, digital media and perceptions of risk and safety, online harassment, and restorative and transformative justice approaches to addressing online harm. Dr. Hasinoff employs media and cultural studies methodologies to investigate how societal understandings of new media affect the development, use, and regulation of communication technologies.
Dr. Hasinoff's scholarly work shows a clear trajectory from examining sexting practices and policies to broader investigations of online harm and justice frameworks. Her recent publications increasingly focus on restorative and transformative justice approaches as alternatives to traditional content moderation and criminal justice responses to online harm.
