Amber Baylor is a Clinical Professor of Law at Columbia Law School, serving as the founding director of the Criminal Defense Clinic. Her work focuses on local criminal regulation's impact on communities affected by intensive policing, combining clinical teaching with scholarly research. She holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law (2006) and an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center (2015).
Her research explores themes such as municipal criminal law design, trauma-informed lawyering, and the intersection of criminal justice and human rights. Notable publications include analyses of protest law, student criminalization, and gendered prison advocacy. Baylor previously directed clinics at Texas A&M School of Law and Widener University Delaware Law School, and has held roles at the Federal Defenders of San Diego and the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem.
Baylor’s teaching includes courses on criminal defense, trauma-informed legal practices, and Palestine-related legal issues. She advises federal clemency campaigns and collaborates with community organizations. Her advocacy emphasizes systemic reform and equitable legal representation, particularly for marginalized groups.
